A
WESTWARD GLANCE
Sacajawea at Fort Mandan 1804
The original painting depicts Sacajawea near the Missouri River's
edge in November of 1804. A mere 14 or 15 years of age and pregnant
with her first child, Sacajawea was experiencing major changes in
her life by late 1804. In mid-November, the Corps of Discovery was
moving into their unfinished cabin in the three-sided fort that
they had named Fort Mandan, and hired Toussaint Charbonneau, Sacajawea's
husband as an interpreter for their trip west, up river in the spring.
Ice was forming at the river's edge and the brutal plains winter
was eminent. Walking to the river for water, she steps up on the
roots of an old cottonwood tree and contemplates childbirth and
the upcoming journey with these white strangers. In the spring she
would go west, become an integral part of the Missouri River's exploration
and secure an honored place in history. On this snowy November evening,
before heading back to her chores in the fort, she pauses for one
last westward glance.

GUARD DUTY 1804
They were hand picked and wilderness tested, these young
soldiers of what Lewis and Clark called "the Corp of
Discovery". By the late summer of 1804 they had become a
tough and determined band of brothers.
Military discipline combined with the certain knowledge that
the frontier demands constant vigilance motivates this
soldier to do his duty while his weary companions talk
around the driftwood camp fires, then roll into their blankets.
Wearing his infantry fatigues, standing with his bayonet
affixed as the last light fades from the sky; this private takes
his turn, at guard duty.
