SILENT COMMAND
by Kyle Carroll

For both the Native American and those hardy woodsman pushing into the trackless forest's of North America, life on the frontier could be a peaceful, garden of eden like experience one moment and incredibly brutal and violent in the next.

Even a short excursion into the forest required that all of the hunter's senses be engaged. The ability to locate game, survive a cold night and be alerted to danger could be enhanced by the presence of a dog. As was often the case, this hunter has paused along a creek to set a beaver trap before resuming the days hunt. His constant companion , a faithful dog of unknown pedigree has sensed something on the ridge above them. Hearing the sounds him self and noticing the dogs posture, he drops his trap quietly and hunkers down behind a clump of cedars. In a gesture perfected during countless days spent in the shadows of the ancient woodlands together, the hunter gives the dog a silent command.
